INTERVIEW with Mascara Bass-Girl
How many years have you been making movies?
I've been doing this for almost 5 years)
Why did you start making movies?
I'm actually a bass player, and I've always had a lot of friends-musicians who needed to make short but cool videos. That's how I became a director
Tell us a little about your project. What will the audience be able to see in your film?
I only make noir style movies, so this is also noir. It's a story about a femme fatale (of course!) who makes phone calls to real (or fake?) ancient greek Gods
Why did you do this project?
I ve always wanted to intertwine Ancient Greece, Modern Moscow and eternal Germany (Part of the filming took place in Dortmund)
One of the problems some directors encounter is directing actors and dealing with some actors, especially in the amateur world. How do you see this topic? What kind of work do you do with them?
I always rely on the will of the movie gods and never give actors instructions on how they should act. I just say: “don't act! don't pretend!don't smile!“. Usually everything comes out naturally
A good movie takes care of all departments. But normally we can not allocate all the resources to have a good photography or spend a lot of money on sound post production or budget to hire actors. In your project what % have you allocated to. I don't just mean money but time as well. Of 100% of the time/money, what % did you dedicate to each department?
-Direction: 5%
-Photography: 25%
-Sound: 15%
-Postproduction: 15%
-Work with actors: 5%
-Art direction/locations: 35%
If you could go back, what would you change about this project? (1 thing only)
Maybe I would make some changes in the color correction
What are you happiest about this project?
We managed to create a noir atmosphere:
On one side - the slow cold Moscow River and ice cubes whispering in glasses, on the other - a hot vamp girl nervously whispering into the phone tube
Make a wish to the movie gods. What do you ask?
I just want to thank them!
What kind of cinema do you like? Genre, directors, actors?
I don't like arthouse movies and all those movies that movie buffs usually like. I'm mostly interested in:
- action movies about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict (“Jack Ryan“/“Condor“/“Tenet“ and so on )
- spy movies and Bond-style movies (“Casino Royale”/2006/ is my main love)
- non-spy movies from the '50s (“How to Marry a Millionaire“/1953/, “Desk Set“/1957/)
- and, of course, noir movies!
My favorite director is Billy Wilder, he made some great noir movies ( “The Lost Weekend“ /1945/) and just some of my favorite movies (“The Seven Year Itch“ /1955/)
And yes, I have a real crush on Mads Mikkelsen!
Imagine that all the movies are going to be lost. If you could save 3 movies, what would they be?
-
all seasons of the Israeli series “Fauda“ /2015-present/
-
-
and I don't know why, but “The Family Guy“ /2000/))))
